Need for Effective Communication

Need for Effective Communication

To be successful, a business needs to communicate effectively with a wide range of people both internally and externally.  Imagine, for example, the chaos which could be caused if British Rail or your local bus company issued inaccurate timetables. Think about what might happen if this type of communication problem occurred in your college or place of work.
Effective communication then, is important for a number of reasons in an organisation including to:

  • issue Instructions to its staff  to tell them what to do and thus enable the business to operate. This is referred to as vertical communication.
  • enable people at the same level within the organisation to communicate  with each other. Different departments such as sales and production, for example, or employees who work in the same department. This is called horizontal communication.
  • communicate with its suppliers, customers, banks and other contacts  in carrying out its business. It must send information about its products, receive orders, supply goods, deal with documents and arrange payments.
  • keep staff informed of what is going on  so that they are able to perform their work better and enjoy what they are doing. It must transmit information about the firm's organisation, products safety regulations and training.
  • provide essential information to staff  on pay, pensions, holidays, other benefits and general working conditions.
